Well its the week of spring break, so be safe and have a good time off everyone! Besides that in my American Lit class we are starting to discuss transcendentalism. I find this belief pretty neat and interesting. I am pretty excited to learn more about it. What does everyone else think about this belief?
I love the transcendental idea that we need to find our oneness and unity with the nature and universe around us. In addition, I love the emphasis on the goodness of mankind, because I do believe that there is a lot of good in each individual. However, I cannot possibly believe that we are completely innately good, because I know my own evil nature and I am aware that we all have hateful thoughts or selfish attitudes that are not just environmentally impressed upon us. Instead, there is definitely a hatred that arrises when we see injustice, prejudices that arrise out of our own closed-minded nature, a selfish desire that causes us to be jealous of others' appearances, wealth, or abiblities, a "survival of the fittest" mindset that occurs when we get in the survival mode (which is horrifying to consider by the way). People are innately good. But people are also innately evil. Ironically, I think this is in complete agreement with, not only much of eastern thought, but also with the Bible. The Bible teaches that we are innately evil and that our "righteousness is like filthy rags," but at the same time, we are created "in God's image." Thus, we are good and evil. Beautiful and ugly. I think life and humanity are too complex to oversimplify into a transcendental worldview.
