graphic novels and making a film

While reading about graphic novels; all I could think about is my childhood. I used to enjoy reading comic books as a child, and actually collected them for a short period of time, but the question is how would I be able to incorporate them in a classroom? Well I figured since most children like comic books you could have them create their own comic books out of the books you have them read in class such as Romeo and Juliet and such.

Last class we made our short story film. I thought this was a lot of fun. Although, it did take quite awhile, and I don't see this lesson possible for high school students. It was a great lesson for college students, but high school I really do not see it happening unless you would give them a month in order to complete the assignments.

  1. Joe, I agree that a lot of students really enjoy comic books. A great way to incorporate this into the classroom is by doing what Dr. Dimarco did in our World Lit. class. At the end of the semester we got to pick any novel, short story, or poem we had read the entire semester and make a four frame graphic representation. It was a great way to show interpretation (like the movie except slightly easier)and a creative way to break the away from the every day activities and lessons. Just thought you might like to try this idea sometime in the future!

  2. I think that you are right about the 20 shot movie in the high school classroom. I know that normally high school students never want to actually do any work so turning them loose for two hours would never work. You would really have to schedule many opportunities and keep going with content at the same time. It would be hard but maybe worth it?
